How do I make my OOC Intro?

There are two options for your OOC Intro post. You can comment in the monthly Meet and Greet post where all the players (new and old) introduce themselves to each other and list their characters, or you can make a separate post in the OOC comm. If the latter, just use 'Introduction' or 'Intro' in the subject line (or something along those lines) and you're good to go.

How do I make my IC Intro?

There are two ways to make your IC introduction post. The first is make a new post in the IC comm with your character appearing on the ship. Where can they appear? The Ten Forward Lounge is the most popular, but your character can appear anywhere that's not restricted (see below)

The second option is to tag into someone else's post. Unless otherwise indicated by subject line or OOC comment, all posts in the IC comm are considered open to all tag-ins (known as OTA). But if you're not sure, or if the date on the post isn't new, feel free to drop a comment at the player and ask.

If you're unsure about style, generally it's prose. You are free to use subject lines however you like; location, starting if the post is OTA or closed to select characters, a quote, or left blank are all things which players do. OOC comments are normally either at the top or bottom of a post.

Where can my character go?

During Quarantine

Initially, your character will be placed under a loose quarantine until they can go through a sickbay check-up. This means that they are restricted to temporary living quarters, the Ten Forward Lounge, and the corridors and turbolifts between them.

Post-Quarantine

After the sickbay check-up, your character has access to the entire ship except for restricted areas meant for crew only (see below).

Characters in Ten Forward are typically assigned a roommate, with quarters on Decks 7, 8 and 9. Most crew quarters are on Deck 8, with civilian living quarters on Deck 32.

Other areas of the ship include: a sickbay, nursery, and gymnasium on Deck 12; main engineering on Deck 36; holodecks located on Deck 10 and Deck 12; ship's stores on Deck 4; Interrogation/Detention Area on Deck 5 with the brig located on Deck 33, Room 5244; an arboretum on Deck 17; and much more, including an unfinished multi-purpose deck on Deck 8 (where additional work spaces are set when needed).

For further descriptions for areas as used in game, click here; for a full list of decks and rooms, click here.

Restricted Areas

Restricted areas are those where ship operations are carried out by the crew, so unless your character is crew or otherwise has an IC reason (such as a job, an appointment, or otherwise had permission granted), they are restricted from the bridge, command centers, transporter rooms and the engineering sections.

Quarantine and Sickbay Check-ups

It's standard Enterprise procedure to quarantine those who have winked onto the ship until they can seen by medical staff to be be checked out for any diseases and to received vaccinations. While under quarantine, the characters' movements are restricted (see Where can my character go? for more details), but once they are cleared, they are allowed to go to any of the non-restricted areas. They'll also be assigned a permanent room (see: Rooms/Roommates).

The check-up post is put up the Friday after the apps are processed.

While ICly your character is required to undergo the check-up, OOCly actually tagging into the post is completely optional so feel free to handwave it being done if you'd prefer. If you are tagging in, specify the name of the doctor you want in the subject line of your tag, and they'll tag you as soon as they're available. If you don't mind which doctor sees your character, just write 'Any' in the subject line.

If you haven't made your IC Intro yet and would prefer to do that first, please feel free to backtag on the Sickbay log whenever it is convenient for you.

Rooms/Roommates

OOC

Unless your character has special requirements or considerations, all characters are assigned a room and roommate by random draw. Some examples of special considerations are: if your character has a spouse or SO they would prefer to be roomed with, if they'd prefer a roommate of the same gender, if your character is unable to share quarters because of their physiology/temperament, etc. If you have a special request, simply comment here to let the mods know.

Each month, we post an OOC list of characters getting roommate assignments, and an IC Roommate Mixer will go up the Sunday after apps are processed (a few days after the Sickbay post) so all characters can meet and mingle.

For a complete list of all the assigned rooms, see here.

IC

The IC Roommate Mixer is considered OTA; new characters can meet their new roommates and explore their quarters, and old characters can meet the neighbours or open their quarters for visitors.

The guest quarters used in-game by most characters in Ten Forward are similar to junior officers' quarters. These consist of a shared living area, separate bedroom, and Jack-and-Jill bathroom; each room is customizable with different furniture styles and comforts, but come standard with your typical hotel-style furnishings. The rooms do not have any windows, as they're located on the interior of the ship. There may be either 1 or 2 attached bedrooms, and per bedroom there will be either bunkbeds or a single-level bed – this will be up to you and the player of your character's roommate to decide which you'd like. The bedrooms also have a small desk/chair, and storage lockers. In the shared living area, there will be a sofa, table, and a replicator terminal. These replicators can produce food, drink, and small items (clothing, instruments, combs and toothbrushes, etc.; nothing bigger than a breadbox).

There will also be a PADD on each desk with the Prime Directive highlighted, but these devices can be used to access the ship's computers as well.

For a more detailed description of the quarters and rooms, go here.

Wait, my character has no money

This is okay! Firstly, the Enterprise's crew are treating all who are whisked aboard by Q as guests, and are thus providing for them.

Secondly, while money hasn't entirely ceased to exist, it doesn't have the central role in lives of Federation citizens that it does for us or as it does in many canons. For more details, see the Memory Alpha article.

That said, there's room for character plots should you want, such as people ICly agreeing to trade and barter items with other characters, or even trying to get credits for an on-planet plot.

NPCS

NPCs (also known as 'redshirts') are background characters with no backstory and no established personality or name which make up most of the IC population of the ship or other setting.

You can use NPCs to answer basic questions, give your character directions or explain how a piece of technology (such as a replicator computer, holodeck, etc.) works, deliver food and drink, help your character up if they fall, and things of that nature. This can happen both in-threads or off-screen (known as handwaving).
